His greatest days at sea were as commander of the largest ship on earth, the ss Great Eastern. He laid 26,000 miles of cable, linking four continents with telegraphic communication, making himself a fortune in the process.
This book is based mainly on Halpin's private papers. Other archives in Ireland, Britain, Canada and the United States have also been consulted for the first time. Jim Rees has written six books on various aspects of County Wicklow history, and has been widely published in Ireland and Britain.
