A founder of the Project Arts Centre, theatre and television director, first full time Director of the Arts Council, General Secretary of the Labour Party, advisor to the first Minister for the Arts, Michael D Higgins, and finally Director of the National College of Art and Design, he was an extraordinarily effective advocate for the importance of the arts in private and public life in Ireland.
