This year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction was, I hope, a hotly contested one.  Full of fantastic works, it featured 2 of Hilary’s top books for 2020 – Hamnet and Girl, Woman, Other

It was with delight we heard that the winner of this year’s prize was Maggie O’Farrell for Hamnet.  Inspired by the story of a famous playwright, this novel is raw, atmospheric and has been top of Hilary’s recommended reads since she read it during lockdown.  A definite add to the reading pile.

The 2020 shortlist was.

  • Dominicana by Angie Cruz
  • Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo
  • A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes
  • The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel
  • Hamnet by Maggie O’ Farrell
  • Weather by Jenny Offill

Previous winners include:

2019: Tayari Jones ‘American Marriage’ / 2018: Kamila Shamsie ‘Homefire’ / 2017:  Naomi Alderman ‘The Power’ / 2016: Lisa McInerney ‘The Glorious Heresies’
